It means “poem” or “poetry.” In Chinese, 詩 names verse and the poetic tradition around it. Japanese uses the same character for poetry, though the word’s scope changed over time.

The poetic tradition is older than this written form. The Classic of Songs, a collection of songs, gathers material dating roughly 1100–600 BCE; the graph appears in surviving Warring States manuscripts from the mid-4th to early-3rd century BCE. The writing evolved; it was not a one-person invention.

What does 詩 mean when someone sends it alone?

Read it as a broad cue about poetry or literature. Alone, 詩 points to a poem, poetry, or poetic expression; surrounding words are needed to tell whether it names a work or a genre.

Japanese usage has a historical split. Before the Meiji period, 詩 generally meant kanshi, poetry written in Classical Chinese. After Western models shaped new-style poetry, the word broadened toward modern-style verse. Haiku and tanka keep their own names, so 詩 does not automatically mean either one.

How did 詩 connect poetry with song?

It named sung verse and the tradition around it. Zhou court musicians collected local songs, edited them, and performed them for the ruler as a way to read the people’s circumstances. The collection later became a Confucian classic, giving poetry moral and political meaning as well as literary status.

In 詩, 寺 supplies the sound component; its separate “temple” sense developed after Buddhism reached China. Connected traditions include 詩經, the Classic of Songs; 楚辭, the Songs of Chu; and 樂府詩, poems linked to the historical music bureau.
