What 市 means
Market or city; the surrounding word decides. Mandarin reads it shì. Japanese reads it ichi for a market, and shi after city names such as 大阪市 (Osaka City). Korean reads it 시 (si).
Where did 市 come from?
It grew from a word for a marketplace. A recognizable ancestor appears in late Western Zhou bronze inscriptions. From Qin–Han through Tang, 市 named the regulated market quarters of Chinese cities, and the sense widened to commercial districts and whole cities.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 市 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
