What 巿 means
It was a waist-tied front panel in ancient Chinese dress. Descriptions of court and ritual clothing say its colors varied by rank. The garment is also called 蔽膝 in Chinese, literally “knee covering.”
Its written shape continued from bronze inscriptions into seal script, an older rounded style, clerical script, and regular script. The garment name also appears in the fuller Chinese characters 韍 and 韨, related forms of 巿. In 沛, 芾, and 旆, 巿 serves as a phonetic component, a part that hints at pronunciation.

1Why does 巿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
