Hangul Syllable Sing

5874/11172

On its own, 싱 is a Korean syllable, not a complete word with one fixed meaning. It sounds roughly like “shing”; the surrounding word supplies the meaning: 싱싱하다 can describe something fresh or vigorous, while 싱글 can mean “single” or begin a verb for smiling quietly. A Korean keyboard input method builds it from ㅅ, ㅣ, and ㅇ.

What 싱 means

By itself, 싱 is a syllable, not a complete word.

It sounds roughly like “shing”: ㅅ begins with a sound close to “sh” before ㅣ, which gives the “i” vowel, and final ㅇ sounds like “ng.” The surrounding Korean word supplies the meaning. 싱싱하다 describes something fresh, vigorous, or vivid; 싱글 appears in the loanword for “single” and in 싱글거리다, a verb for smiling quietly to oneself.

Why does Hangul use square syllable blocks?

A block keeps one syllable’s sounds together. Hangul splits a syllable into an initial consonant, a vowel, and sometimes a final consonant, then arranges those parts in one visual unit. That is why 싱 appears as a compact block instead of three loose letters.

The earliest record of Hangul dates to 1443, when Hunminjeongeum, the name of the system, was created; its explanatory book appeared in 1446. The alphabet was designed to write Korean speech systematically, rather than make readers rely on Chinese characters. Phags-pa, a square script for Mongolian and other languages under the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty, was promulgated in 1269. Some Korean historians consider it a possible influence on Hunminjeongeum, but that link is debated; 싱 was not copied from it.

How do I type 싱?

Type its three Hangul letters in order with a Korean input method. On Dubeolsik, the common two-set Korean keyboard layout, press T, L, D for ㅅ, ㅣ, ㅇ; the input method joins them into 싱. If the letters stay separate, check that the input method is composing Hangul rather than outputting raw letters.

Fonts may draw the block differently, but it remains the same syllable. Unicode can decompose it into its component letters and recompose it; those internal forms do not change the text’s meaning.

Inside Korean writing, 싱 is an ordinary syllable; by itself, it reveals little about tone or politeness.

Do not translate a lone 싱 as the English verb “sing”; it may be only part of a Korean word.

Questions people ask

Why does 싱 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
