What 싶 means
In -고 싶다, it means “want to.”
가고 싶다 means “I want to go.” But -ㄴ가 싶다, -ㄹ까 싶다, and -다 싶다 can signal wondering or a tentative guess.
How did 싶다 evolve?
Its spelling and meaning both changed.
식브다 is recorded in the 15th century; 십브다 and 시브다/시프다 preceded 싶다, which emerged in the 19th century. Its older “think/feel” sense shifted toward desire and inference.
Hangul, Korea’s alphabet, was completed in 1443 to fit Korean speech better than Chinese-character workarounds; it was published in 1446.
싶어 is casual, 싶어요 polite, and 싶습니다 formal.
