Hangul syllable ssagg

5883/11172

싺 is one Hangul syllable block; as of 2026, it has no established standalone dictionary meaning or chat convention. In Korean writing it contributes one syllable, and its consonant and vowel pieces follow Hangul’s system for building syllable blocks. Hangul was created in 1443 and explained in a book published in 1446.

What 싺 means

싺 is one precomposed Hangul syllable block made from consonants and a vowel.

Unicode decomposes it as ᄊ ᅡ ᆩ: an initial consonant, a vowel and a final consonant. The keyboard-style forms ㅆ, ㅏ, ㄲ can be entered with a Korean IME to form the block.

“Ssagg” is Unicode’s algorithmic label for this component pattern, not an English translation. In Korean text, the other syllables in the word provide its meaning.

How did Hangul syllable blocks develop?

This block belongs to Hangul’s system for building syllables.

Korean differs from Chinese, and before Hangul people adapted Chinese characters to record Korean, including in systems called Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal. These approaches were difficult to use for everyday Korean.

King Sejong created Hangul in 1443, initially called Hunminjeongeum. In 1446, a book with that title explained the new script’s purpose and design. Its letters combine into syllable blocks from an initial consonant, a vowel and sometimes a final consonant; 싺 follows that system rather than having a separate origin.

Hangul became the official national writing system in 1894, more than 450 years after its creation. This changed the script’s public status, not a special meaning for 싺.

How do I type 싺?

Use a Korean IME to enter its three jamo.

Enter the keyboard jamo ㅆ, ㅏ, then ㄲ; the input method combines them into one Hangul block.

Unicode can also represent the syllable as the conjoining-jamo sequence ᄊ ᅡ ᆩ. Canonical normalization treats that sequence and the precomposed block as equivalent.

Neutral and technical: it reads as Korean writing.

Alone, 싺 leaves its intended word unclear; ask for the surrounding Korean text.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 싺 look different in another font?

Fonts can draw the same character with different outlines. If you see separate components instead of one block, the text may use the decomposed sequence ᄊ ᅡ ᆩ, or the font or app may not shape that sequence as a block.
