What 썼 means
On a Korean 2-set keyboard, enter ㅆ ㅓ ㅆ.
On a QWERTY layout, press ShiftT, J, then ShiftT. The Korean input method—the keyboard software that assembles Hangul—joins the opening consonant, vowel, and closing consonant into 썼 as you type. A block changing shape mid-entry is normal.
If a text field shows the letters separately, the input may still be in a composition state. Unicode also allows Hangul syllables to be stored as separate letter components and recomposed, so text that looks the same can have a different underlying sequence.
What does 썼 mean?
It marks a past form; the whole word supplies the translation.
In Korean, 썼 is usually part of the past form of 쓰다. Depending on the word and sentence, this verb can mean writing, using or spending something, wearing something on the head, or tasting bitter. The surrounding words tell you which sense fits.
In 썼어요, the final ㅆ links into the vowel at the start of the ending and is heard at the next syllable's beginning. Before a consonant or at the end of an utterance, it closes like a short t, without a vowel after it.
Why is 썼 a square block?
Hangul groups the letters of each syllable into a compact block.
Hangul is the Korean writing system. It was created in 1443, and Hunminjeongeum, the book explaining the new script, was completed in 1446. The script addressed a practical mismatch: Korean speech differed from Chinese, and the Chinese characters used for writing did not fit Korean speech and grammar well. Hangul grouped letters into syllable units that readers could recognize and learn.
Neutral Korean spelling inside a word; alone, 썼 usually needs its surrounding word for interpretation.
Do not translate 썼 by itself; the surrounding word supplies its sense.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
