hangul syllable ssye

Hangul syllable ssye

6077/11172

쎼 is a Korean Hangul syllable made from consonant ㅆ and vowel ㅖ. Its reading is romanized ssye: a tense s followed by ye, beginning with the y sound in “yes”; by itself it is a syllable fragment, so the surrounding Korean word supplies the meaning. On a Korean 2-set keyboard, press ShiftT, then ShiftP.

What 쎼 means

The surrounding Korean word gives 쎼 its meaning. This Hangul syllable combines consonant jamo ㅆ with vowel jamo ㅖ. Its romanized reading is ssye: a tense initial s followed by the Korean ye vowel.

Hangul's block design was made for Korean sounds. King Sejong promulgated Hunminjeongeum, the new Korean writing system, in 1443; a 1446 explanatory text set out how its letters combine into syllables. The system was intended to make writing Korean accessible to people poorly served by Chinese-character literacy. Hangul later shifted from a writing system challenged by elite literati toward everyday and national writing by the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

How do I type 쎼?

On Korean 2-set, use ShiftT, then ShiftP.

On the Korean 2-set layout, ShiftT enters ㅆ and ShiftP enters ㅖ; the Korean input method (IME) joins them into 쎼. While a syllable is being composed, the IME may show its components separately.

Why can 쎼 look different?

A font can change the block's spacing without changing the syllable.

Unicode can represent a Hangul syllable as one precomposed block or as a canonically equivalent sequence of jamo. Font design changes spacing and proportions, so 쎼 may look different across fonts while remaining the same syllable.

Orthographic: use 쎼 in Korean text or when discussing Hangul input.

Alone, it gives a reader no surrounding Korean word from which to infer its role.

Questions people ask

1

Why does my keyboard show ㅆㅖ instead of 쎼?

The input method is showing the two component jamo separately because it has not finished composing the syllable. Finish the composition to produce the single Hangul block.
