hangul syllable taen

Hangul Syllable Taen

9441/11172

탠 is a Korean Hangul syllable, roughly like “ten” with a small puff of air after t; a full word supplies its meaning. King Sejong devised Hangul, first called Hunminjeongeum, in 1443 to make Korean writing easier; a 1446 book explained it. It appeared in Buddhist, Confucian, practical and literary works and became official in 1894. Possible influence from Phags-pa, a script used in the Mongol Empire, remains disputed.

Why does 탠 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
