Hangul syllable teulg

9922/11172

Type 틁 by entering ㅌ, ㅡ, ㄹ, then ㄱ in a Korean IME (Korean input method). Hangul, the Korean writing system, forms syllable blocks from letter components; the surrounding word supplies the meaning. Its last component, ᆰ, combines two consonants.

What 틁 means

Enter ㅌ, ㅡ, ㄹ, then ㄱ in a Korean IME.

Switch your device's input method to Korean and type the components in order; Microsoft Korean IME arranges them into one syllable block as you type.

Unicode decomposes 틁 as ᄐ ᅳ ᆰ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final consonant cluster. NFC normalization can turn that sequence into one precomposed syllable. A font can change component placement and proportions, but not the block's identity.

What does 틁 mean by itself?

It records a Korean syllable; its surrounding word supplies meaning.

Hangul is the Korean writing system; it groups consonant and vowel letters into blocks. Here, ᄐ is the initial consonant, ᅳ the vowel, and ᆰ the final cluster; the block represents a syllable rather than an idea.

If a message contains only 틁, ask which word it belongs to. One block alone does not establish the sender's intended word.

Why are Korean syllables written in blocks?

Hangul groups letters into compact blocks, one syllable at a time.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, was developed in 1443. The Hunminjeongeum, a text introducing it, was published in 1446. Its letters represent Korean speech and combine into syllables.

Phags-pa, a square script used in the Mongol empire, was promulgated in 1269 and is discussed as a reference in Hangul's creation; it is separate from Hangul, not the source of 틁. Unicode's precomposed Hangul syllables follow the 1992 KS C 5601 standard. Hangul appeared in handwritten manuscripts and movable type, then was handled by typewriters and digital text; the syllable-block principle remained.

1

Why does 틁 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
