Hangul Syllable Toj

9655/11172

톶 is one syllable block in Hangul, the Korean writing system, with no established standalone meaning as of 2026-09-13. If it arrives alone, ask whether it was meant as a character sample or spelling question. Its final ㅈ is pronounced with the same unreleased “t” sound as final ㅅ, so it can sound like 톳.

What 톶 means

톶 is a syllable block in Hangul, the Korean writing system. The block uses initial consonant ㅌ, vowel ㅗ and final consonant ㅈ. Unicode’s label “Toj” names this letter pattern. As of 2026-09-13, 톶 had no established standalone meaning in Korean.

Hangul was created under King Sejong in 1443 so Korean speech could be written without relying on Chinese-character literacy. Hangul’s earliest recorded printed use was the Korean lyrics in the 1447 royal songbook 용비어천가. The script later appeared in practical and religious books, lessons and literature.

Names used for the writing system over time included 훈민정음, 정음, 언문, 반절, 국문 and eventually 한글. These are names for Hangul as a whole; they do not give 톶 a special meaning in any one period.

Why does 톶 sound like 톳?

Final ㅈ and ㅅ share an unreleased “t” sound in Korean. At the end of a syllable, the two consonants sound alike. 톳, written with ㅅ, is a Korean word for edible seaweed; its spelling still distinguishes it from 톶.

Why does 톶 look different in different fonts?

Fonts can arrange Hangul’s component letters, called jamo, differently. Their shape, size and placement can shift inside the square syllable cell without changing the syllable. Unicode can store the same text as the single block 톶 or as the equivalent sequence of three linked Hangul letters, 톶. Normalize both forms to Unicode Normalization Form C (NFC) when software needs reliable text comparison.

If someone sent 톶 alone, ask whether it was a character sample or a spelling question before treating it as a message.

Don't treat a lone 톶 as a reaction; ask whether it was a spelling sample.

Why does 톶 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
