What 톳 means
It means hijiki, an edible seaweed, in Korean. It does its work inside food words: 톳밥 is rice cooked with it, 톳나물 is seasoned blanched 톳, and 톳무침 is dressed 톳. 톳 vs 톨 is a regional-name distinction: both name the same ingredient.
The word names an old coastal food, not a new code. In 1814, Jasaneobo listed this seaweed as 토의채(土衣菜) while cataloguing local marine life; that is the earliest evidence traced here, not proof modern spelling began then. A 1995 Jeju food record describes 톳밥/톨밥 mixed with grain as famine-relief food.
Neutral Korean ingredient word, used in food names rather than as a reaction.
