What 튌 means

It is one unit of Korean spelling, not a complete word.

Hangul is the Korean writing system: it groups alphabetic letters, called jamo, into syllable blocks. In 튌, ㅌ is the initial consonant, ㅟ the vowel, and ㄽ the final consonant cluster. Together they show the syllable's spelling; the surrounding Korean word supplies its meaning.

A lone 튌 cannot be translated reliably without its word. Ask for the full Korean spelling if it arrived on its own.

Where did Hangul's block format come from?

The block is part of Hangul's original design.

Hangul was completed in 1443, and its design is explained with examples in the 1446 Hunminjeongeum manuscript, a guide to the new writing system. That history dates the block format, not this individual syllable.

Hangul let people write Korean with letters for its sounds, unlike Chinese-character methods then used to record Korean. Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters for Korean; Hangul offered a sound-based alternative. It later appeared in correspondence, petitions, records, literature, and everyday objects, and became Korea's official national script in 1894.

How do I type 튌 on a Korean keyboard?

Enter its jamo in order with Korean input active.

Type ㅌ, then ㅜ and ㅣ to form ㅟ, then ㄹ and ㅅ to form final ㄽ. On the standard 2-set QWERTY layout, those keys are xnlft; in English mode they enter Latin letters.

Do not put spaces inside the sequence. If pasted jamo stay separate, the source or destination may preserve individual letters instead of composing the block. Fonts can draw the same character with different proportions.

Neutral inside Korean text; by itself, it gives too little context to translate.

Ask for the full Korean word before translating a lone 튌.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 튌 show as an empty box?

That usually means the font or app cannot display this Hangul syllable. A font with Hangul coverage or software with Unicode support can render it.

Why did my pasted jamo stay separate?

They are likely separate Hangul jamo rather than one composed syllable block. A source or destination app can preserve the individual letters without joining them.
