hangul syllable wa

Hangul syllable wa

6721/11172

In Korean, standalone 와 means “wow!”; after a vowel-ending noun, it can mean “and,” “with,” or “compared with.”

Text symbol

What 와 means

Bare 와 is “wow”; attached 와 is a Korean particle.

Alone, it expresses surprise or admiration. The particle 와 follows a vowel-ending noun; 과 follows a consonant-ending noun. It links nouns as “and,” marks accompaniment (“with”), or marks comparison (“compared with”).

Hangul was created in 1443 to make Korean writing more accessible; a guide appeared in 1446. Earlier writing used Chinese characters and adapted systems such as idu and hyangchal. 와 contains ㅘ, a compound vowel; Unicode can decompose or recompose its block.

Alone, 와! is expressive; noun-attached 와 is ordinary grammar.

A noun-attached 와 is not a “wow” reaction.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 와 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
