What 완 means
The rest of the Korean word decides. Treat a lone 완 as a syllable within a word, not a complete translation.
In 완전 (完全), the word means “complete” or “whole.” In casual Korean, 완전 before a description works as “totally” or “so”: in 완전 좋아요, the intensifier is 완전 as a whole, not 완 by itself. 완전히 is the adverb “completely.”
How did this syllable enter Korean writing?
It follows Hangul’s history, not a separate invention story. Hangul’s creation was recorded in 1443; its explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum, appeared in 1446. Hangul was designed to write Korean speech accessibly and later spread through translations, literature, teaching, and correspondence.
In Korean words, the same Hangul syllable can correspond to different Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean word roots): 完 in 완전, 완벽, and 완성; 婉 in 완곡; 腕 in 완장. Hangul writes the syllable, while the full word identifies which Hanja lineage—and meaning—is involved.
Neutral inside ordinary Korean words; alone in a message, 완 can feel like a clipped fragment unless the missing word is obvious.
Don’t translate a lone 완 as “complete” before seeing the rest of its word.

1Why does 완 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
