Hangul syllable yah

얗 is a Hangul syllable block with ㅑ, the “ya” vowel, and final ㅎ; its sound depends on context. It appears inside 하얗다 (“to be white”), not as a word by itself.

What 얗 means

It is part of a word, not a word by itself. In 하얗다, the adjective stem ends in ㅎ. Why does 하얗다 become 하얘요? Some endings drop ㅎ from the spelling, giving 하얀 (“white” before a noun) and 하얘요 (“it is white”).

Hangul was created in 1443; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum guide explained its design. Earlier, Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean. Reforms recognized Hangul as Korea’s official writing system in 1894. Computers can store 얗 as one block or as ㅇ, ㅑ, and ㅎ.
