What 얉 means
Enter ㅇ ㅑ ㄾ in a Korean IME.
A standard Korean two-set input method builds a block from an initial letter, a vowel, and an optional final consonant. In 얉, ㅇ is the initial, ㅑ is the vowel, and ㄾ is the compound final, also called the batchim. Entering only ㅇ ㅑ forms 야.
If it stays split, check that ㄾ is being entered in the final position; input methods can differ in which compound finals they compose.
What does 얉 mean by itself?
Alone, 얉 gives too little context to identify the sender's intent.
Inside a Korean word, read it as one syllable within the spelling. By itself, it may be a fragment or a typing test; ask the sender before assigning it a tone.
Where did Hangul come from?
Hangul was created under King Sejong in 1443. A book called Hunminjeongeum, explaining the new script's purpose and principles, was published in 1446.
Before Hangul, Idu, Gugyeol, and Hyangchal used Chinese characters to write Korean; these systems were difficult to learn and use. Hangul was designed as an easier writing system for Korean.
It appeared in Buddhist scriptures and Confucian translations, then spread into practical and public writing. In 1894 it became Korea's official national writing system.
A neutral Korean syllable; alone, it leaves the sender's intended tone unclear.
Do not infer a mood from 얉 alone.

1Why does 얉's outline vary by font?
Font-dependent. Unicode's reference drawing is not mandatory; the active Hangul font shapes the block, so outlines and spacing can differ without changing the text character.
