hangul syllable yeg

Hangul syllable Yeg

6666/11172

옉 is the Hangul syllable named yeg, said roughly “yek” with a clipped final k. In a Korean word it contributes one syllable; the full word supplies the meaning. A Korean 2-set keyboard builds it from ㅇ, ㅖ, and ㄱ, and fonts may arrange those pieces differently.

What 옉 means

It is one Korean syllable; the surrounding word gives meaning.

Read it roughly as “yek,” ending in a clipped k. Hangul syllables combine letters called jamo: initial ㅇ, vowel ㅖ, and final ㄱ. Here, ㅇ has no starting sound, ㅖ gives the “ye” sound, and ㄱ closes the syllable with a short k.

옉 belongs to Hangul’s history, not to a separate sign tradition. The script’s creation was recorded in 1443, and Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the new writing system, was completed in 1446. The project aimed to represent Korean more directly than writing centered on Chinese characters. Hangul later appeared in translations, practical books, religious works, and literature.

How do you type 옉?

Use Korean input and type d, ShiftP, r.

On the standard Korean 2-set layout, those keys enter ㅇ, ㅖ, and ㄱ in order. The Korean input method combines them into 옉. In English input mode, the same keys produce Latin letters.

Why does 옉 look different in different fonts?

The font changes the letters’ layout, not the character.

Unicode can represent the syllable as one precomposed block or as a sequence of its Hangul letters. Fonts choose the placement, shape, and size of those pieces, so the proportions inside the block can vary. A system without a Hangul-capable font may show an empty box.

Use 옉 as a syllable in Korean spelling or as an input test.

Alone, it cannot tell you which Korean word the sender meant.

Questions people ask

1

Why can pasted 옉 stay as separate jamo?

It can. The text may contain the three Hangul letters separately instead of as one syllable block, and some apps leave them unjoined. If one character matters, use the precomposed syllable 옉.
