Hangul syllable 엾

6655/11172

On a Korean Dubeolsik (2-beolsik) keyboard, enter d-u-q-t; the IME joins the jamo, or Hangul letters, into 엾. Alone, 엾 is a syllable block whose meaning comes from the larger Korean word around it. The common lookalike is 없, as in 없다, with ㅓ instead of ㅕ.

What 엾 means

On a Korean Dubeolsik keyboard, type d-u-q-t. These QWERTY-position keys enter ㅇ, ㅕ, ㅂ, then ㅅ; a Korean input method (IME) joins the jamo into one block, combining ㅂ and ㅅ as the final batchim, or syllable-ending consonant cluster. If Latin letters appear, switch the input mode to Korean.

Does 엾 mean anything by itself?

It needs a Korean word or context to carry meaning. Hangul writes consonants and vowels in syllable blocks. If split into its underlying Hangul jamo (Unicode decomposition), 엾 is ᄋ ᅧ ᆹ: an initial consonant, a vowel, and a final cluster. The final jamo ᆹ is the cluster ㅄ in syllable-final form; it belongs to one syllable, not two.

Unicode treats precomposed 엾 and the decomposed sequence 엾 as canonically equivalent. A text editor or search tool can expose different underlying sequences even though both represent the same Hangul block. That is an encoding distinction, not a second meaning.

Where did this kind of block come from?

It belongs to the Korean alphabet, Hangul. Hangul, then called Hunminjeongeum, was created in 1443; an explanatory book about the alphabet was published in 1446. It was designed to make Korean writing easier to learn than relying on Chinese characters. Early Hangul carried Buddhist and Confucian books, practical knowledge, letters, and labels; it later spread through daily and official communication. 엾 is one syllable formed within that writing system, so its history belongs to Hangul rather than to a separate emblem.

It reads as technical or language-learning text, especially when sent alone.

In 없다, use 없; 엾 is a different syllable.
