hangul syllable eobs

Hangul syllable eobs

6599/11172

없 means “not there,” “not exist,” or “not have” in Korean. It usually appears in a form such as 없다 or 없어요, and that form’s ending sets politeness.

Text symbol

What 없 means

It means something is absent or not possessed. 시간이 없다 means “I have no time”; 카페에 없다 means “someone or something is not at the café.” Its counterpart 있다 expresses presence or having something.

Middle Korean texts from the 15th century record related forms such as 업스라 and 업고져. Older Korean paired related 잇- forms for presence with 없- forms for absence; some older patterns for intention and commands later narrowed. Hangul was created in 1443 to make Korean writing accessible without Chinese-character literacy, and its explanatory publication appeared in 1446. These are dates for the script, not the word’s origin.

The ending sets tone: 없어 is casual, 없어요 polite, 없습니다 formal.

Bare 없 is a stem, so a reply with only that syllable can sound unfinished.
