What 업 means
Occupation, duty, or karma—the whole word decides. In Korean, 업 can stand alone as a word. Its dictionary meanings include an occupation, a duty, and Buddhist karma; these are distinct readings, not interchangeable translations.
A review of Korean traditional spirituality from 2018 links 업, 업신, and 업왕신 with a household spirit associated with wealth. This is a folk-belief use.
Why does 업 have so many meanings?
The meanings meet through vocabulary, not the shape. 業 is a Chinese character used in Korean vocabulary as hanja. It connects 업 with words for work and duty and with the Buddhist karma sense. The Hangul block 업 is not a simplified drawing of 業.
The suffix -업 marks a business or industry in a specified field. A field name before it narrows the kind of work or business being discussed.
Hangul was created in 1443 to make Korean easier to write, and its explanatory book, Hunminjeongeum, appeared in 1446. Before Hangul, Korean was also recorded through systems that adapted Chinese characters to Korean.
How should I read 업 in a message?
Ask for the whole word or sentence before choosing a translation. If someone sends only 업, its intended meaning is unclear. In fuller text, 업보 points to karma; 직업 means a profession, and 생업 a livelihood.
Work and livelihood readings are practical; the Buddhist-karma sense is religious or moral, so the surrounding Korean word matters.
A bare 업 does not by itself mean karma.
