What 였 means
It marks a noun’s past identity after a vowel.
With 가수 (“singer”), 가수였다 means “was a singer”; 가수였어요 is polite. After a consonant-final noun such as 학생 (“student”), the full form is 학생이었다.
Hangul was created in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 to make Korean easier to write than through Chinese-character conventions. Its letters combine into syllable blocks.
Neutral Korean grammar inside a sentence; unfinished on its own.
