What 𐴰 means
It means zero.
The Hanifi Rohingya zero fills the zero place in decimal numbers. A Unicode proposal reproduces a handwritten digit chart and an excerpt from a primary-level arithmetic book, showing the digits in number notation and lessons.
Why does Hanifi Rohingya have its own digits?
The digits belong to a writing system created for Rohingya.
Rohingya has been written in Arabic-based, Burmese (Myanmar), and Latin-based scripts. The Rohingya Language Committee developed Hanifi in the 1980s under Maulana Mohammed Hanif as a script for practical literacy. Its letterforms reflect influence from Arabic, Latin, and Myanmar writing, but the proposal describes Hanifi as a modern construction with no direct genetic affiliation to those scripts.
A committee document finalized February 19, 1980, marks an early documented milestone. The Unicode proposal also reproduces a primer digit chart and part of an arithmetic book.
Why does 𐴰 appear as a square?
A missing Hanifi font can make it a square.
As of 2026, a device or app without Hanifi font support may show 𐴰 as a square. Hanifi text runs right to left, but a digit sequence runs left to right.
Script-specific and matter-of-fact: it marks zero in Hanifi Rohingya number writing.
A square usually means the font cannot show it; it is not another zero.
