How was the Hanifi Rohingya alphabet developed?
Hanifi was developed for Rohingya, with Arabic writing as a model.
The oldest dated chart cited in the Unicode proposal was finalized on February 19, 1980; it records committee work. The proposal credits Maulana Mohammed Hanif and colleagues with developing this right-to-left alphabet during the 1980s.
Earlier Rohingya writing included Arabic; the language also appears in Burmese and Latin scripts. Hanifi drew some influence from Latin and Myanmar writing, but is not a direct descendant of Arabic. It appears in primers, books, and newspapers.
