What ֭ means

Enter it after the consonant; it appears at the word’s start. In text order, place ֭ after the base consonant and its vowel. Hebrew shaping displays it at the word’s opening, a pattern called prepositive placement.

What does Hebrew accent Dehi mean?

It marks a small break in the verse’s chant. Dehi is a cantillation mark in the Tiberian system, a set of Hebrew reading signs, used in Psalms, Proverbs, and Job. It helps divide a verse into phrases rather than changing a word’s everyday meaning. In ritual reading it also cues melody and stress; in study, its phrase break can matter more.

How did the notation develop?

Jewish scholars called Masoretes recorded an oral Hebrew reading tradition. The recognizable Tiberian notation is attested in the 9th–10th centuries CE. Earlier Babylonian and Palestinian systems also marked Hebrew reading, but used different signs.

As of 2026, Jewish communities and occasions give the same ta’am, or reading accent, different melodies, while its role in dividing a verse remains recognizable. Tiberian, Palestinian, and Babylonian systems are historically connected ways of preserving Hebrew reading, but their signs are not interchangeable.

Liturgical and scholarly: ֭ signals a prepared biblical reading text, not casual Hebrew prose.

Do not swap ֭ with ֖; their similar shapes stand for different reading roles.

Questions people ask

2

Why does Dehi look different in different fonts?

It can. As of 2025, Unicode leaves the horizontal placement of Hebrew cantillation marks partly to font conventions; Dehi also has special ordering beside vowels.

Can I use Dehi in modern Hebrew writing?

Not as a general-purpose mark. It belongs to biblical and liturgical reading notation; in ordinary Hebrew prose it signals a specialized reading text rather than everyday spelling.
