Hexagram for Revolution

49/64

䷰ points to a major change that has become necessary, with timing and trust at stake. In the Yijing, it is a divination figure about replacing an arrangement that no longer works. In a message, the specialist glyph can signal a Yijing reference while leaving the specific change unstated.

What ䷰ means

It points to radical change when the need and timing are clear.

䷰ is one of the six-line figures in the Yijing, the Chinese Book of Changes, used in a divination tradition. Its traditional Chinese title is 革, commonly translated as Revolution, Change, or Molting. The classic text links change with the right time and restored trust, not a dramatic gesture for its own sake.

Its upper three lines form the Lake trigram ; its lower three form the Fire trigram . Possible precursors include line-and-angle marks on Neolithic objects, but their purpose is uncertain; recognisable six-line divination figures developed later.

Why does ䷰ carry several readings?

Its divinatory role came first; later readers added interpretive layers.

The Zhou Yi was used as a divination manual: a calculated six-line result framed an answer to a question or situation. Records from the Warring States period in ancient China show the tradition in historical decision-making.

The ancient core text was later read alongside explanatory commentaries. By the Western Han dynasty, image-and-number approaches linked hexagrams with seasons, natural elements, and divination, while philosophical readers used the book to discuss how the world is ordered. Across successive Chinese dynasties—the Han, Wei, Jin, Song, Ming, and Qing—scholars developed distinct schools of interpretation.

If the recipient may not know the Yijing, say what needs to change. Alone, the glyph points to transformation but leaves the specific plan unstated.

Scholarly and divinatory; it signals familiarity with the Yijing tradition.

A reader may mistake Revolution for an immediate call to revolt; the traditional reading stresses timing and trust.
