What ꧙ means
It is the Javanese numeral for nine. In a Javanese-script number, ꧙ has the same value as 9 in Latin digits.
A history of old writing places the earliest certain example of Javanese numeral figures at 841 CE; it also mentions an earlier, unreadable example. The earliest figures slightly adapted numerals used in Vengi and Pallava writing in South India. By the 14th century, their shapes had changed substantially.
How were Javanese numerals used?
They wrote ordinary numbers in Javanese script. Inscriptions show a decimal system used for amounts and dates, alongside older ways of writing numbers as words or letters. The surviving record misses some everyday uses because old plates and manuscripts were not always numbered.
The Javanese numeral separator, pada pangkat, can frame a number in running text: ꧇꧙꧇. The marks set the numeral apart from the surrounding writing.
Javanese writing developed from Kawi, an older script in the Brahmi family from South Asia. Kawi also links Javanese with Balinese and Sundanese script histories; Javanese script itself appeared in some Sundanese-language writing, while Balinese has its own closely related script. As of 2026, everyday Javanese is generally written in Latin script, so the traditional script is not the default way to write 9.
How do I type ꧙?
Use a Javanese input layout.
As of 2026, the Java Kongres layout maps the 9 key to ꧙. On another keyboard layout, the key may differ.
If ꧙ appears as an empty box, the current font probably lacks a Javanese glyph. This is a text character, so its display depends on font support.
Neutral in Javanese-script numbers; unfamiliar outside that setting.
Without Javanese-script context, a reader may not recognize it as nine.
