What ಲ means
It represents the l sound, with a built-in a vowel. A vowel sign replaces that a; virama is the mark that removes it. The surrounding Kannada word supplies the meaning.
Letters joined through virama can appear as a combined shape, called a conjunct. A Kannada keyboard enters the consonants in spoken order, even when the font joins their shapes.
Where did Kannada script come from?
It developed from Brahmi through regional South Indian scripts. Brahmi was an ancient writing system. Records from the Kadamba and Chalukya dynasties preserve early forms of the shared Telugu–Kannada script.
Writing recorded donations, land grants, temple business and administration, alongside literary life. Halmidi, an inscription generally regarded as the earliest surviving Kannada-language record, is dated around 450 CE. It shows an earlier script stage, not today's exact ಲ shape.
Is ಲ the same as ಳ?
No. ಳ has a curled-back tongue position; ಲ does not. This distinction also mattered historically. Kēśava's Kannada grammar Śabdamaṇidarpaṇam, dated to 1260 CE, describes ಳ where Sanskrit readers might expect ಲ. In Kannada alliteration—repeating consonant sounds—plain l did not freely replace it.

1Why does ಲ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
