Kannada Letter Ma

Type ma with Kannada phonetic input or the InScript layout.

Phonetic input lets you type Latin letters and select a Kannada suggestion; InScript puts Kannada letters on a fixed keyboard layout. For an m without its built-in short a, add virama ್ after ಮ to make ಮ್.

Where did the Kannada letter come from?

It developed with the Kannada script from southern Brahmi forms.

The Kannada script grew from southern forms of Brahmi, an early Indian script, into regional Kannada styles. Halmidi, around 450 CE, is often used as the earliest surviving benchmark; proposed earlier evidence includes a Tagarthi inscription around 350 CE and a Chandragiri inscription roughly 50–100 years before Halmidi. Those earlier dates are disputed.

Early Kannada writing appears in public inscriptions. Prakrit and Sanskrit were prominent in earlier elite records; royal support expanded written Kannada, while Jain and Buddhist writers contributed to its literary and religious use.

What sound does ಮ make?

By itself, it reads “ma”; a vowel sign changes the vowel.

The consonant includes a short a unless a virama cancels it. Add a vowel sign, as in ಮಾ, and the vowel changes. In a consonant cluster, ಮ can join a conjunct—a combined consonant form—which fonts may draw differently from the standalone letter.

Telugu మ is a historically related ma letter in a different script. Kannada script also writes the Tulu, Beary, Konkani, Havyaka, and Kodava languages, so this script alone does not always identify the language.
