What ಼ means
Place it after the consonant it modifies.
If no vowel follows the consonant, the stored order is consonant nukta halant. The halant suppresses the consonant’s inherent vowel, so the nukta comes before it.
The nukta stays in the same written syllable; any following vowel sign still belongs to the consonant it modifies.
What sound does the Kannada nukta mark?
It marks a changed consonant sound.
In Kannada, the mark extends the sounds available for writing loanwords; its familiar uses include the z and f sounds.
Kannada and Telugu both descend from Brahmi, an older South Asian script. Telugu has its own nukta for additional sounds; it is a separate sign.
Why does the Kannada nukta appear on its own?
It needs a consonant and script-aware shaping.
A font may show an unattached nukta on a dotted-circle placeholder or as a missing-glyph box. That is fallback rendering, not a different Kannada letter.

Questions people ask
1Why does ಼ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
