Kawi Letter Kha

19/87

Kawi kha is the letter 𑼓, a k followed by a puff of air. In a word it supplies one consonant, usually with an inherent a that nearby Kawi signs can change. Sent alone, it reads like a script sample or display test, not a complete message.

What 𑼓 means

𑼓 writes a Kawi consonant with a puff of air after k. Kawi consonant letters carry an inherent a; vowel signs change it, the killer sign removes it, and the subjoiner joins consonants into a cluster. Some Kawi marks are stored in a different order from how they appear, so this letter alone does not translate as a word.

Kawi grew gradually from the Pallava script, used in southern India; late Pallava and early Kawi forms overlap. The oldest known Kawi record is the Plumpungan stele, an inscribed stone near Salatiga in Central Java, dated c. 750 CE. From the mid-8th century, Kawi appears in practical records such as land grants and royal edicts. Compared with monumental stone inscriptions, Kawi also shows the more flowing habits of palm-leaf writing.

By the end of the first millennium, Kawi had become more decorative and calligraphic through its role in Old Javanese literature. The script also wrote Sanskrit, Old Malay, Old Balinese, and Old Sundanese; regional Kawi forms later developed, directly or indirectly, into modern Javanese, Balinese, Batak, and Lontara scripts. Active use gave way to other scripts from the 16th century. As of 2020, enthusiasts and communities also used revived Kawi in social-app chats and image posts, sometimes to write modern Javanese or Indonesian.

What does it mean when someone sends 𑼓?

Usually a letter sample or rendering test, not a personal reaction. If it arrives alone, ask what text or script discussion it belongs to; this one consonant cannot tell you the sender’s intended message.

A letter inside the Kawi writing system; alone, it reads more like a character sample than a conversational reply.

Treat a bare 𑼓 as a character sample until the surrounding text gives it a message.

Questions people ask

Why does 𑼓 show as a box?

A font or the app’s text-shaping support may lack Kawi display support, so it can show a box or fallback glyph. The text still contains 𑼓; the missing display support changes only its appearance.
