Kawi Letter Ga

20/87

𑼔 is Kawi ga, a consonant letter with a built-in “a” sound. In Kawi writing, a vowel sign or linking mark can change how it works. Kawi font support varies, so a box may mean the display system lacks the script.

Text symbol

What 𑼔 means

It writes the consonant ga with a built-in a.

Kawi is written left to right, with consonants carrying a default vowel. A vowel sign replaces this built-in “a”; a mark called the killer suppresses it, and the conjoiner, a linking mark, joins a following consonant into a cluster.

When did Kawi first appear?

Kawi developed gradually from the earlier Pallava script.

The earliest known record in an early Kawi form is the Plumpungan stele near Salatiga, Central Java, around 750 CE. A stele is an upright stone bearing an inscription. Standard early Kawi appears in inscriptions from Kayuwangi (856–882 CE) and Balitung (899–910 CE).

Early Kawi served official work such as land grants and royal edicts. Toward the end of the first millennium, its forms became more decorative as it carried Old Javanese literature; later palm-leaf and gebang-leaf manuscripts held court poetry, religious writing, and learned texts. Kawi was used between the 8th and 16th centuries for Old Javanese, Sanskrit, Old Malay, Old Balinese, and Old Sundanese.

Why does Kawi letter ga look different?

Kawi writing changed across time and region.

A Kawi font may follow an early inscription or a later local style, so letterforms can genuinely differ. A square box instead points to missing Kawi font or shaping support.

Unicode 17.0 notes renewed interest during the 21st century, including some social-media writing of modern Javanese or Indonesian. In those posts, people use Kawi to write those languages; 𑼔 still represents the consonant ga.

In Kawi writing or script study, 𑼔 is an ordinary consonant; elsewhere, it reads as specialist script text.

A square signals missing font or shaping support, not another ga letter.
