khitan small script character-18b03

Khitan Small-Script Character 18B03

𘬃 belongs to the Khitan small script, used by the Khitans of northern China to write their language; its Unicode name gives the code point, not a translation. Tradition dates the script to about 925 and credits court scholar Yelü Diela; the earliest securely dated surviving inscription is from 1051. It remained in use under the Jurchen Jin dynasty until the court banned Khitan writing in 1191.

What 𘬃 means

It mixed signs for words with signs for sounds.

Some signs stood for whole words; others represented sounds and often formed compact blocks spelling one word. Chinese writing influenced the script’s structure. The Jurchen people built on Khitan models, creating their Large Script in 1119 and Small Script in 1138.

Why does 𘬃 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
