khitan small script character-18b75

Khitan Small Script Character 18B75

118/471

𘭵 is a Khitan sound sign in Khitan Small Script; one scholarly reconstruction reads it as gẻ. This script was made to write Khitan, a historical language of northern China, and survives chiefly in inscriptions. Most sound signs join into word clusters, so this glyph alone does not translate a word.

What 𘭵 means

Kane's 2009 reconstruction assigns it the value gẻ.

That is a proposed sound reading, not an English gloss; by itself, the glyph is not a complete word.

Why was Khitan Small Script created?

It was created to write the Khitan language.

Yelü Diela devised it around 925. Its forms drew on Chinese characters; its creation is also said to have been inspired by Uyghur script, a writing system used by Turkic peoples farther west, though the two scripts have few visible similarities. Stone epitaphs—inscriptions on graves—and monuments preserve most surviving texts. The script remained in use under the Liao and Jin until an imperial edict abolished it in 1191. The Jurchen scripts developed in the Jin era adapted Khitan models.

1

Why does 𘭵 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
