𘮦

khitan small script character-18ba6

Khitan Small Script Character

𘮦 is a character in Khitan Small Script, a writing system for the Khitan language; its Unicode name is an index label, not its meaning or reading. Created around 925 to fit Khitan's grammar better than Khitan Large Script, it borrowed Chinese character forms and reportedly drew on the principles of Uyghur writing, a separate script used by Uyghurs. The oldest known dated text in this script is from 1053.

What 𘮦 means

Sometimes: a logogram can stand for a whole word.

Khitan Small Script also uses phonograms, signs for sounds. These usually join in clusters of two to eight characters, in vertical columns read from right to left in traditional texts.

The glyph alone may therefore be a whole word or one part of one; grouping in its inscription gives the clue.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘮦 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
