Khitan Small Script Character 18BD7

216/471

𘯗 is a Khitan small-script character; its chart label identifies a code point, not its reading. Made to write Khitan, it clustered sound and word signs; Chinese forms and the Uyghur alphabet reportedly influenced it. Tradition puts it around 925; a 2026 study argues use came later, citing the earliest securely dated surviving inscription (1051). It survives chiefly in tomb inscriptions, coexisted with Khitan Large Script, and influenced Jurchen writing.

What 𘯗 means

Sometimes: a word sign or a piece of a sound cluster.

Khitan small script uses logograms (word signs) and phonograms (sound signs). A logogram usually represents a whole word on its own; phonograms usually join other signs to spell a word, though they can also appear alone. This character's role depends on its place in the inscription.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘯗 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
