khitan small script character-18bd8

Khitan small-script character 18BD8

217/471

𘯘 is a Khitan small-script character; its Unicode name identifies it, but does not translate it. Created around 925 to write the Khitan language, it uses signs for words and sounds and is said to draw on Uyghur writing. A scholarly list of surviving monuments starts with a 1053 tomb inscription. It was used through the Liao, Qara Khitai and Jin periods; Jurchen writing under Jin rule adapted it.

Why does 𘯘 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
