What 𘯵 means
Its code-based name identifies it, not its reading.
Khitan (also spelled Kitan or Qidan) is the language this script wrote. Signs represented words or sounds; sound signs often formed clusters.
When did it take shape?
Its creation date is debated.
It reshaped Chinese character forms and borrowed sound-writing ideas from the neighboring Uyghur script. The Liao dynasty used it for letters, memorials, place names and poems; Jurchens later reused it and modeled their own scripts on it.
The traditional 924/925 date is debated: a 2026 study argues for later standardization under Liao Emperor Shengzong, citing the 1051 Yelü Yugulin grave inscription as the earliest securely dated survivor.
