What 𘰟 means
It names a Khitan sign, not a translated word.
Khitan Small Script writes Khitan. As of 2026, it is only partly deciphered: sound signs group into words, while other signs stand for whole words. The Unicode name does not identify 𘰟’s role in a source text.
Traditional histories place its creation around 925. A 2026 study argues it was systematized later under Emperor Shengzong of the Liao dynasty and identifies a 1051 epitaph as the earliest securely dated surviving evidence. Its forms drew on Chinese characters, with a reported link to Uyghur writing. Jurchen scripts later adapted Khitan writing; the Jin dynasty abolished it in 1191.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘰟 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
