When did Khitan Small Script take hold?
It was made to write Khitan and outlasted the Liao.
Tradition credits Yelü Diela with creating it around 925; its design drew on Chinese character forms and reportedly the Uyghur people’s writing. A 2026 study argues practical use began later: its earliest securely dated surviving tomb inscription is from 1051. It appears on monuments and bronze mirrors under Liao, Western Liao and Jin; Jin abolished it in 1191. Jurchen writers modeled their scripts on Khitan’s large/small pair.
