khitan small script character-18c84

Khitan Small Script Character 18C84

389/471

𘲄 belongs to Khitan small script, one of two systems used to write Khitan; its Unicode label identifies it, not translates it. Khitan small script is traditionally dated to about 925, but a 2026 study argues it was standardized later; its earliest secure survivor is a 1051 tomb inscription. Used under Liao, Qara Khitai and Jin, it drew on Chinese forms and reportedly sound patterns from Uyghur, informing Jurchen writing.

What 𘲄 means

Khitan small script uses signs that stand for whole words and signs that stand for sounds. A word-sign can appear alone; sound-signs usually join in blocks of two to eight characters to spell one word. The full block can matter when working out how a word is read.

Why does 𘲄 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
