What ៌ means
Follow spelling order, not the mark's on-screen position.
The consonant comes first and robat immediately follows it in the character sequence. If a dependent vowel belongs to the same pattern, add it after robat; do not rearrange the input to imitate the display.
What does robat do in a Khmer word?
It marks an r element in a consonant cluster.
Robat is an Indic-derived device comparable to the Devanagari repha: it associates an r element with the following consonant. The wider Khmer script is thought to descend from Brahmi-Pallava traditions. Its practical job was to preserve that cluster spelling in Sanskrit- and Pali-derived Khmer words.
The broader Khmer literary tradition reaches back to the 7th century, but an exact first inscription for robat is not securely established in the sources consulted. As of 2026, the defensible history is an inherited convention that evolved inside Khmer writing, not a mark with a named inventor.
Why can the same mark be silent?
Do not assume the marked r is pronounced.
In older Sanskrit- and Pali-derived words, robat can still represent the historical r, but some spellings keep it only as a fossilized spelling. Modern Khmer does not use robat as the default way to write every r-initial cluster; full ro plus a subscript consonant is the usual alternative.
Do not force an audible r from the mark alone. Read the established word as a whole, because inherited spellings can preserve the mark after its sound has disappeared.

3Questions people ask
1Why does ៌ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Khmer block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
