What ໒ means
It is the Lao digit for two. Use it for dates, prices, or pages; Western digits also appear in Lao.
The Tham script served religious writing; Tai Noi (Lao Buhan) served secular records. Early examples include a Tham document (1376), a Lao Tham manuscript (1520), and the earliest known Tai Noi inscription in Laos (1497)—dates for writing, not the invention of ໒. Modern Lao grew from Tai Noi, in a regional history linked to Thai and Khmer writing; Khmer traces to Pallava, an old South Indian script.

1Why does ໒ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
