What ๒ means
It is the Thai numeral for two.
The Thai 2 records quantities, dates, eras, document numbers, and list positions. For example, รายการที่ ๒ means “item two” in a Thai list, and ข้อ ๒.๑ marks subclause 2.1 in Thai official writing.
Thai script has roots in older regional writing. A National Library overview traces early Thai-area forms through Pallava, a writing system from South India; a study of Sukhothai inscriptions describes Thai script as adapted from Old Khmer, an earlier Khmer script. The oldest generally accepted written evidence of Thai script is Inscription 1, a carved stone text dated 1292. Guidance available on 2026-09-05 encourages Thai numerals in official writing, while Thai Revenue Department rules allow ordinary 2 on invoices.
How do I type ๒?
On Thai Kedmanee, press Shift2.
Switch your keyboard input to Thai and select Kedmanee. If Shift2 gives a different character, check the layout: Pattachote maps the Thai digits to different keys.
Why does ๒ look different from 2?
It is Thai text drawn by a font.
The familiar digit 2 has the same value but is a separate character. A font can change ๒’s weight and proportions; it remains a text digit rather than vendor emoji artwork.
It gives writing a Thai-script look and can signal formality or Thai identity; ordinary 2 remains common in practical writing.

2Questions people ask
1Why does ๒ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
