Where does Thai zero come from?
It belongs to a Thai numeral tradition shaped by Khmer writing.
Thai writing drew an early model from Khmer script in Cambodia, and the numeral traditions are related. Khmer zero is ០; ๐ is the Thai form. They share a value, but each belongs in its own language's text.
The Ramkhamhaeng inscription, an early Thai-script monument often cited in accounts of Thai writing, is traditionally dated to 1292, though scholars dispute its date and authenticity. That debated date does not establish when ๐ itself first appeared.
Thai digits have a formal-document role: a cabinet policy dated 2 May 2000 promoted them for official documents but allowed the familiar 0–9 digits for finance, tables, and foreign-language work.
