What ๑ means

Kedmanee puts ๑ on Shift2. The unshifted key is slash (/); Shift1 produces . Thai digits occupy shifted positions with gaps, so the printed number row does not show the mapping.

Pattachote is another Thai keyboard layout, with different digit positions; check which layout is active before relying on a shortcut. For ordinary 0–9 entry, switch to English. A typeface can redraw ๑ without changing its value.

What does ๑ mean?

Read ๑ as one in Thai writing. It marks a count, date, heading, or record number; surrounding words tell you what is being counted.

Thai numeral history is tied to the script: Thai writing was adapted from Old Khmer, and Thai and Khmer both descend from Brahmi, an older writing system. Sukhothai Inscription 1, generally dated to 1292, is the earliest generally accepted evidence of Thai script. A modern transliteration uses ๑ in a date but writes the inscription in modern Thai characters, so it cannot show whether the numeral had the same shape then.

A 2019 study of the Trinisinghe manuscript tradition describes Thai numerals arranged in magic squares—number grids linked to Buddhist thought and ritual.

Why is ๑ different from 1?

They are separate characters for the same number. ๑ belongs to Thai writing; 1 belongs to the Latin digit set.

An ASCII-only field may reject Thai ๑ even when its value is clear. Use Thai digits where the field accepts them.

Thai digits in official documents can mark a formal Thai-script style; agencies may choose whether to use them.

In a machine field, ๑ may not work as a substitute for ASCII 1.
