John Rath’s 1974 alphabet guide writes the sound as dh/λ: one consonant made by starting with a d and letting air escape along the sides of the tongue. Barred lambda ƛ is a different consonant, made with greater pressure.
A typewriter modified for Heiltsuk was producing teaching materials by 1984. In the early 1990s, custom fonts filled gaps left by ASCII, the computer text standard then in use; without the matching font, old files could show unrelated symbols. Unicode encoded the Latin lowercase letter and its capital counterpart in 2024, letting the spelling preserve uppercase and lowercase forms. Latin lambda also appears in documented Liq̓ʷala (a variety of Kwak̓wala) and Pilagá orthographies; each language determines its sound.
It belongs to specific Latin-script spellings; its sound and role come from the language using it.
Greek λ is a different letter; a similar outline does not make it usable in a Latin-script word.

1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
