Lepcha letter Dza

26/74

What ᰙ means

It is a Lepcha consonant letter used to form syllables.

Dza pronunciation varies by speaker: it may sound like the joined consonants at the end of “adze,” like z in “zoo,” or near the “zh” in “measure.”

Lepcha consonant letters carry a built-in vowel. A following vowel sign changes it, and a separate final-consonant sign can close the syllable; some vowel signs are typed after the base but displayed to its left.

When was the Lepcha script created?

It is thought to date to around 1720; authorship remains disputed.

The script is associated with Sikkim's king Chakdor Namgyal. Traditions also credit a figure named Thikung Men Salong, or a joint effort; the inventor, date, and place are unsettled.

A manuscript of Legends of the Panaus from the late eighteenth century is the earliest surviving manuscript evidence. Two Lepcha reports from 1828 are the oldest dated documents; neither attests ᰙ separately.

How is Lepcha writing connected to Tibetan?

Lepcha writing descends directly from Tibetan script.

Lepcha writing is directly derived from Tibetan script, but it is distinct. Its older model was written in vertical columns; Lepcha turned the letterforms a quarter-turn and writes left to right. It also developed its own vowel marks and explicit final-consonant signs.

One proposed account links the royal-era project to Buddhist teaching and translation of Tibetan religious books; that motive remains disputed. Lepcha writing appears in stories, prayers, blessings, legends, poetry, songs, cultural works, and religious texts. Lepcha became an official language in Sikkim in 1977.

It belongs to Lepcha/Róng writing, where consonant letters help form syllables.

By itself, ᰙ is a letter, not a complete Lepcha word.
