lepcha letter ma

Lepcha letter ma

22/74

ᰕ is a Lepcha consonant letter for m; its built-in vowel makes the bare syllable read ma. In Lepcha, also called Rong, it belongs inside a syllable, and dependent vowels can change its vowel. One rendering quirk: some vowel marks follow it in text but appear to its left.

What ᰕ means

It is the ma syllable base in Lepcha writing.

ᰕ supplies m plus the script’s inherent vowel a. A dependent vowel changes that vowel; a separate final-consonant sign represents a consonant ending without the inherent vowel. So ᰕ contributes to a Lepcha syllable rather than carrying a universal reaction on its own. If someone sends only this letter, the surrounding Lepcha text gives the context.

When did the Lepcha script begin?

The script is thought to have taken shape around 1720.

It is thought to have been devised around 1720 under Sikkim’s king Chakdor Namgyal. Other accounts credit Thikúng Mensalóng; the documentary record does not settle one inventor. Linguist Richard Keith Sprigg identified eyewitness accounts of a murder in 1826 as the earliest datable Lepcha texts he found; they survive together in a document dated 14 April 1828. Lazóng, a Lepcha reading primer, teaches reading and writing. The written tradition also includes stories, prayers, religious works, and school and literary books, with Lepcha religious material alongside Tibetan Buddhist ideas.

Why do vowel signs move around ᰕ?

Some signs follow the base in text but render elsewhere.

Lepcha dependent vowels are encoded after ᰕ. The -i, -o, and -oo signs render to its left, while -e renders below it. A box usually means the font lacks Lepcha coverage; moved marks point to a shaping issue. The text order stays the same, so the visual rearrangement does not make a new spelling.

Neutral and script-specific: it marks a Lepcha syllable, not a chat tone.

Is ᰕ an emoji? No: it is a Lepcha letter; read it as script text unless the surrounding message shows otherwise.

Why does ᰕ show as a box?

A box usually means the font lacks a Lepcha glyph; moved marks are a rendering issue, not a different spelling. Lepcha vowel signs follow the base in text even when -i, -o, and -oo display to its left or -e below. Try a Lepcha-capable font if the letter is missing.
