What ᰍ means
Select na in a Lepcha input method; the physical key depends on its layout. Different keyboards can assign the same letter different shortcuts.
What does ᰍ mean in a Lepcha word?
It is the base Lepcha letter na, with an inherent vowel. Róng is an abugida: each consonant letter carries an inherent vowel, and attached signs can change the syllable. By contrast, ᰰ is a separate consonant sign used when a syllable ends in n.
The Róng script is generally dated to around 1720 and derives from Tibetan writing; inherited letterforms were turned for horizontal writing. Its origin is disputed: Lepcha tradition credits Thikúng Mensalóng, while other accounts credit Chador Namgyal. The earliest dated Lepcha texts identified by Richard Sprigg date to 1828.
The script was made to write Lepcha. Buddhist text-making may have encouraged its institutional use, but Lepcha community accounts do not reduce its origin to missionary work. Older texts combine Lepcha beliefs with Tibetan Buddhist values; surviving works include alphabet lessons, correspondence, stories, religious works, and ritual texts. In 2026, Róng has official status in Sikkim.

1Why do Lepcha vowel signs appear on the left?
Some Lepcha vowel signs are entered after the base character but render to its left. That follows a shaping rule; the display position does not change the input order.
